Toyota
reveal Hybrid Camry Concept powered by compressed natural gas (CNG) in
the first debut of the car at the Los Angeles Auto Show takes place this
weekend.
Increased
fuel costs have made CNG becomes a more attractive choice for
consumers, and Toyota is hoping to add this cheap fuel "the list of
alternative fuels" of them.
Toyota spokesman said, the company has forecast peak oil by 2010, and CNG can hold its position as a source of raw materials. However, do not currently have any plans to put this concept into commercial production.
Fuel compared to gasoline, CNG provides a shorter distance traveled as well as slower acceleration. But in fact today, the price of gasoline will be a worry for potential customers. Huge
reserves and cheap of CNG (about 2.5 USD / 3.78 liters) is expected to
offset easily in the face of rising fuel automobile that users face.
This latest concept cars can carry about eight gallons of fuel with natural gas, the distance is about 250 miles (400 km). Another benefit of burning compressed natural gas is cleaner emissions, lower CO2 than gas and oil.
Previously, Toyota has been trying to sell the vehicles using CNG. In 1999, the company has sold a Camry fitted CNG four-cylinder engine for a customer group in California. However,
in an era of relatively cheap gasoline, customers were not attracted by
the vehicle requires measures special refueling techniques and a
limited refueling infrastructure. The program was interrupted a year later. Currently, only about 1,000 CNG refueling stations nationwide, with less than half of this is open to the public.
Benefits of CNG is being expanded because of the economic benefits and consumer awareness about environmental issues. By this time, the U.S. CNG pipeline system is a network of approximately 1.8 million miles and is expanding further. The
investment in technology to develop infrastructure for the use of CNG
will be necessary in order to attract more and more customers are aware
of it.
